Poetry: The Cross

Mr. Bertie Gilmore, N. Ireland

On the cross I saw Him bleeding.
On the cross was Jesus nailed.
On the cross my sin He cancelled,
He the Victor there prevailed.

At the cross, the vilest sinner|
God can save, redeem and bless.
Jesus’ blood - no other merit,
Can my ransomed soul confess.

Now the blood-stained cross is standing
Between me and earth’s vain joy.
May the blessed Saviour only,
All my heart and soul employ.

When my Lord shall come to take me,
To His home beyond the sky,
I shall ever sing His praises,
For His work on Calvary’s tree.
