Christ Supreme

Alex Dryburgh

There are six men in the Old Testament and God says about those six men there are none like them: Moses, Job, Solomon, Hezekiah, Josiah and Saul.

MOSES

As we think of Moses, we see a wonderful character. In Exodus 2 we notice what he was to his mother. She saw that he was a proper child. In Hebrews 11 we notice what he was to his parents. They saw that he was a goodly child. When we come to Acts 8,we find what Moses was to God. He was exceeding fair (or fair to God).

Notice three things in the life of Moses. In Exodus 11:3 we notice the thought of greatness. "Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt." In Hebrews 3:5 we read about Moses being faithful. In Numbers 12:3 we see Moses marked by meekness. "Now the man Moses was very meek above all the men of the earth." So there was none like Moses as far as meekness was concerned.

JOB

Twice in the book of Job we read those lovely words, "Hast thou considered my servant Job that there is none like him in all the earth, a perfect and upright man, one that feareth God and turneth away from evil." There was none like Job as to his perfection and none like him as to his patience.

SOLOMON

Next we see that there was none like Solomon as far as his wisdom was concerned. In 1 Kings 3:12 God says to Solomon "I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart. So that there was none like thee before and none like thee after."

HEZEKIAH

Many commendable things are said about Hezekiah. He was a man who dave to the Lord; He departed not from following him and he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that David his father did. He trusted in the Lord God of Israel so that after him there was none like him among all the kings of Judah (2 Kings 18:5).

JOSIAH

One of the best reigns among the kings of Judah was the reign of Josiah. God says about Josiah in 2 Kings 23:25, "And like unto him there was no king before him that turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might according to all the law of Moses. Neither after him arose any like him."

SAUL

Saul was a man who had plenty of height but not too much depth. God said about Saul in 1 Samuel 10:24 "Samuel said to all the people, ‘See ye him whom the Lord has chosen that there is none like him among all the people."’

As we consider those six men, we notice they each had a strong point. We see Moses marked by meekness We see Job marked by perfection and patience. We see Solomon who was marked by wisdom. We see Hezekiah trusting in the Lord. We see Josiah turning to the Lord and we see Saul head and shoulders above his fellows. These men each had a strong point.

Keep in mind that if a man has a strong point, he will also have a weak point and generally speaking, a man usually fails in his strong point. Moses was a man who failed in his meekness and Solomon was a man who failed in his wisdom.

CHRIST SUPREME

Keep in mind there was not one thing outstanding in Christ. The Lord Jesus never had a strong point for if he had a strong point he then would have a weak point and that was never so in regards to the person of our Lord Jesus Christ. In Psalm 45:2 we read "Thou art fairer than the children of men, grace is poured into thy lips." In Song of Songs 5:10 we note "My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand."

Chiefest of ten thousand
Fairer than the fair
Altogether lovely
Great beyond compare.
Lord of all creation
Man of Calvary.
Son of God who loved,
And gave Himself for me.

When we come to the Gospels we see the greatness of the Lord Jesus. He is greater than Solomon and greater than Jonah, greater than the temple, greater than all. "Great is the Lord and highly to be praised, His greatness is unsearchable."

Three things are seen in the Lord Jesus in John’s Gospel. He knows all, He is before all, and he is above all. He knew all men and He knows all things. He is before all. In John 1 we see Him before John the Baptist. "My successor is my superior because he was my predecessor." In John 8 we see him before Abraham. And in John 17 we see Him before the world was.

Before the world in which He made
Its circuit had begun.
Forever was he Son of God,
Forever God the Son.

"Then He is above all. He that is from above is above all. Far above all. God has exalted him far above all. Thrones and dominions around him shall fall. God has exalted him far above all." So we have six men, each outstanding in one thing. We have one perfect man outstanding in everything.
